Meet the Characters of My Funny Valentine

Only a few weeks separate you and the launch of My Funny Valentine. Since I know you’re just as excited as I am, I think it’s time to meet the characters you’re sure to love. And what better way to learn about these characters than with some fun interview questions?

Get to Know Isobel Powell

Isobel is the female protagonist in My Funny Valentine. As we already know, she’s a master’s student. Let’s learn more about what makes Iz unique!

Where do you live?

I currently live in Portland, Maine, but I’m originally from Hartford, Connecticut.

You’re in a master’s program. What are you studying?

I’m studying towards a master’s degree in Global Technology. I only have a few credits left, so I’m expected to graduate this spring.

Why are you going to Punta Cana?

Well, you first need to know that I do not want to go to Punta Cana. My best friend, Suze, talked me into it. It wasn’t easy, but she finally talked me into it. Said we deserve one last trip together before I move after I get my master’s degree.

What’s your favorite food?

My mom makes the best baked spaghetti. That’s absolutetly my favorite food.

What’s your favorite movie?

Don’t judge me, but 16 Candles is my absolute favorite movie. But Jake Ryan…can you blame me??

What’s your favorite song?

“Transatlanticism” by Death Cab for Cutie

What do you do in your free time?

As a student and full-time programmer, I don’t have much free time. Although, when I do have a few extra minutes, I love hiking around Portland.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

I absolutely hate food waste! I want to make the world a better place, so food waste goes against everything I hope to accomplish in the future.

How do you deal with stress?

Probably hiking or getting outside. Maybe reading a good book. You know…the usual.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you?

So looking back, this isn’t as embarrassing as I thought. But anyway, when I was in middle school, I was getting on the bus. Literally out of nowhere, I slipped on a patch of ice in front of everyone. I landed weirdly and couldn’t get up at first, so the bus driver had to park the bus and help me up. Then, when we got to school, the bus driver told me I had to stay back and wait until everyone got off so the nurse could make sure I was okay. For thirteen-year-old me, that was the worst day of my life!

Get to Know Dean Kennedy

Dean is the male protagonist in My Funny Valentine. As we already know, he’s a real piece of work. Let’s learn more about what makes Dean unique!

Where do you live?

Well, I’m between places right now. I used to live in Pittsburg, New Hampshire, but I’m getting ready to move to North Carolina.

Why are you moving to North Carolina?

I need a fresh start. That’s all you need to know.

You said you need a fresh start. Why’s that?

I just gotta get out of Pittsburg, okay? Can we just move on now?

What’s your favorite food?

I love me some good pizza.

What’s your favorite movie?

The Princess Bride. Hands down.

What’s your favorite song?

That’s tough. I love music, but if I had to pick just one song, it’d probably be “Hail to the King” by Avenged Sevenfold.

What do you do in your free time?

Going out to the bar.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

So this is gonna sound dumb after what I just said, but honestly people. I just really hate ’em sometimes, ya know?

How do you deal with stress?

Ha. Not sure how to say it without being too explicit. Is that clear enough for ya?

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you?

When I was in high school, I asked a girl I had a major crush on to the upcoming school dance, and she rejected me in front of the whole school. Said I wasn’t her type or whatever. I pretended I had the flu for a week after that because I was so embarrassed.
